Seth and Ryan reluctantly get ready for their first day of school. In Jimmy's apartment, Summer tries to convince Marissa not to skip school despite the social aftershocks from her recent overdose. Finally at school, Ryan catches up with Marissa and asks if she wants to hang out after class, while Summer wards off an approaching Luke. Back at home, Sandy and Kirsten get ready for work and bicker about his "attractive" co-worker.
Ryan and Marissa go to class and find themselves in an awkward seating arrangement across from Luke and Holly. Seth tries to get through to Summer and ends up enlisting the help of Anna Stern. She agrees to help him understand Summer, who seems to be the jealous type.
At work, Rachel tells Sandy about a new case. A developer has purchased the Balboa Heights land directly above the preserved Balboa Wetlands, and they want to start digging. This could be a career making case for an environmental preservation attorney, so Rachel wants Sandy's help. The plaintiff in said case is Kirsten's dad, Caleb's firm. Sandy suspects that Kirsten will not appreciate Sandy's work on this case. Rachel tells him he has to make a decisions.
Ryan and Marissa meet up after class, but Marissa needs to help plan the school carnival. The next morning, Ryan complains that everyone has something except him. Seth suggests soccer and Ryan decides to try out, since he used to play.
Marissa and Jimmy are getting ready for another school and non-work day when Luke drops by. He wants to see Marissa, but Jimmy doesn't let him in. Luke asks him to tell her that he is sorry.
The next day at school, Seth is about to sit next to Anna in class when Summer walks in. Seth offers his seat to Summer, which does not please Anna. Seth and Anna dive back into their rapport, which makes Summer slightly jealous.
Kirsten finds out that Sandy is working on the case against the Newport Group and drops in on Sandy at work to question him about it, creating conflict in the Cohen household.
Ryan goes to the soccer field to try out for striker, which is Luke Ward's current position. Luke is waiting for Marissa after her carnival meeting and says they need to talk. He begs her forgiveness and asks for another chance. Marissa tells Luke it is over. Anna continues to help Seth with making Summer jealous in Biology Lab.
That night, Marissa drops by the pool house to talk to Ryan. They both want to know why the other didn't tell the truth. They argue, and Ryan says this just isn't going to happen. Marissa agrees and takes off. The next morning, Sandy confronts Ryan about the phone call from the soccer coach, who says that Ryan has talent but a terrible attitude. Sandy tells Ryan that it is understandable that he hates the kids at school, but he is just one mistake away "from someone taking you from us." Ryan realizes he's going to have to straighten up.
Carnival night, Seth and Anna continue their bonding over Skee-Ball. Seth goes off to exchange his tickets for prizes, and Ryan tells Anna she should make a move for Seth instead of just being his buddy. Ryan spots Marissa heading to the Ferris wheel and, though he's afraid of heights, gets in with Marissa. Naturally, the wheel stops him at the top. Back on the ground, Anna kisses Seth. Summer takes note of the kiss and Seth takes note of Summer taking note. He asks Anna if this is all part of her plan, and Anna's heart is shattered. Summer tells Seth she needs a ride buddy for the Tilt-a-Whirl they go off together. Anna watches and holds the stuffed monkey Seth got her with the skee ball tickets.
Atop the ferris wheel, Ryan pours out his heart to Marissa, despite his fear of heights. Marissa comments on how Ryan must need something to take his mind off of the heights. Ryan wonders aloud what could possibly take his mind off being 50 feet in the air and Marissa interrupts him with a kiss.
